Ava's Mate Read online

Rane, his sister’s mate, was giving Logan a look that if he was a weaker man, he would have pissed his pants and fled. Crap! What had he done now? He racked his brain thinking of his last conversation with his sister. Nope, nothing. Logan looked at his brother for help. Hayden currently wore a shit-eating grin.

Jamie came over and patted Logan on the back. “I don’t know if you’re the luckiest bastard in the world, or the unluckiest. All I will say is good luck.” Jamie pointed to two men behind him. “Yo. You two are with me tonight. Move your arse. The others are waiting in the van for you.”

Rane growled. “Come on, Browns, you’re both with me tonight, so no more bitching or fighting or I’ll put you on babysitting duty for two months.”

Logan groaned as he followed his brother and Rane out of the compound to the van where four werewolves were sitting. Tristan, Luke, Daniel, and Duke who introduced himself as he was the only one he didn’t recognize or know. Logan had worked with the others a couple of times before, they were the craziest. He’d never worked with all the men together.

Logan looked to Rane. “Where are we heading?”

Rane grinned at him and it made him shiver, taking an involuntary step back. Rane was fucking scary. “Since we don’t have the girls tonight, we’re going to do the restaurants, back alley nightclubs, and bars.” His grin, if possible, got bigger, showing his sharp, lengthened canines. “I hope you weren’t wanting an early night, because tonight’s going to be busy.”

All the werewolves laughed. Logan inwardly groaned. So much for finishing early so he could get laid, or try to. He shrugged and hoped they did in fact have a busy night after all. He might be able to sleep then.

Heads turned as they walked into the nightclub. The music was blaring, and Ava, Faith, Stacy, Lexie, Sara, Erin, Amie, Kirby, and Sandra all headed straight for the dance floor. A David Guetta song came on, and they all smiled.

Ava was having a ball, the most fun she’d had since her sister had left. They’d had the best night so far, and it was only one AM. They’d gone to an all-you-can-eat restaurant then chatted at a bar. Girls’ night out needed to become a weekend thing. It was nice to have people close to her age to socialize with. She never really needed anyone else besides Eve, she supposed being a twin had stopped her from making friends her own age.

She smiled as Faith shimmied and spun around, laughing. Ava had been friends with Faith as a child, but Faith always hung out more with Jamie or Kane whenever they were around. With Eve and her little sisters, Ava hadn’t felt she needed anyone else. These last couple of weeks and months she’d had so much fun branching out with new friends who weren’t her siblings.

Spinning, and laughing, they all danced and just had a great time until Faith swore then went into a vision. Ava and Sandra grabbed Faith, and the other girls followed as they took Faith to a corner of the room.

Ava looked at Lexie. “You feel anything? Does the ground feel something?”

Lexie shut her eyes and concentrated. She opened them and her face turned white. “Please tell me you brought your weapons and one of the patrols is close, because something big is coming. All I can feel is the earth is very uneasy. There’s something not far that’s all bad. Somethi—” Before Lexie could say any more Faith’s eyes flashed open.

“We need to get everyone out of here now. Kirby, call Rane, and tell him to get their arses here. I’ll call Kane.”

Kirby got on the phone as Faith continued, “I don’t know if we’ll make it this time if we don’t get everyone out. I saw eight demons, not to mention minions. Please tell me no one forgot their weapons!”

Ava reached down and pulled out a small knife. The end of it had been frozen in a special solution. But Ava wasn’t carrying anywhere near the amount of weapons that Sandra and Faith pulled out from their shirts and boots. Shit, even Kirby, Lexie, Erin, Amie, and Stacy had more knives than her.

Faith raised her eyebrows at her.

“Don’t start, Faith. I’m never going to hear the end of this from my brothers, don’t join their ranks. Anyway, you know I’m a lover not a fighter. I always tried to get out of practicing.” She looked around to make sure Sandra wasn’t close before she whispered, “I sometimes wish I was human.”

  Faith’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t worry, I can fight. How long do we have before they get here?”

Faith sighed. “If we’re lucky we have ten minutes to get everyone out of here.”

Sandra grinned and wandered off. A second later the fire alarm rang and sprinklers turned on.

Stacy, who was clutching her knife so hard her knuckles were white, muttered, “They won’t come when the sprinklers are going like this. Can’t we just sneak away now? Everyone else is out, they’ll be safe now.”

Ava sighed. God, she wished they could do that. Ava looked to Faith and groaned as she said to Stacy, “Stay if you want or leave. You’re welcome to do either, but we can’t leave those monsters out there alive to kill and take people. You’re welcome to go, really. I actually advise you to. But I’ll be staying.”

Ava sighed. She hated fighting, but she wouldn’t let the fucking demons win. “You can go, Stacy. I’m staying with Faith, so pass me one of your ice knives, but keep your other ones. If you follow the crowd now you can get out.”

“I’m going to go with Stacy,” Amie added.

Stacy looked at Lexie, who shook her head. “You two go. I’m staying. I need to help.”

Stacy nodded and handed one of her ice knives to Ava, then she and Amie ran, joining all the people rushing out. Crap, that only left them with six including her, and Lexie was a pure human not mated to a werewolf. At least Kirby was mated to Rane and could help control the minions. Erin was slowly learning to fight, and she was surprisingly good fighting with the knives. Faith was frigging four months pregnant. On the plus side, she’d trained with them all since she was six. Sandra and she were the only werewolves.

Ava shrugged out of her jacket, which she gave to Lexie as she wasn’t mated to a werewolf so she wouldn’t have the extra abilities and would need as much coverage as she could get if demons came, because their blood was acid.

The sprinklers turned off, and Faith took a stance and started to count down. She made it to three before the minions came flying in. Kirby stepped forward, focusing on as many as she could. Ava watched in amazement as the minions started killing each other.

Eight massive, hulking, ugly demons came in behind the minions, they laughed when they saw the pitiful group the girls made. Ava half-changed along with Sandra and the demons laughed again. The biggest in the group huffed out, “Oh, this is going to be too easy. Look, there isn’t even one each!”

The smallest of the group, who was about eleven and half feet tall, had massive horns sticking out of his head. The black thorns that covered his body were thick, and his tail was double arrowed. “Let me take them on, all by myself. They’re a pitiful looking bunch.” He smiled, his white and black teeth sticking out more against his bright red skin.

The largest of the group, easily sixteen feet tall, whacked the smallest one on the back. “Sure, you can have a go. They might even just come with us if we leave the wolves alive.” All eight demons laughed.

Ava shuddered and noticed the other girls reacting the same way. It cost Kirby as she momentarily lost control of the last couple of minions. Surprisingly, she gained it back quickly. The problem was that when this happened the demons zeroed in on Kirby, and the largest spoke again. “Well, well, look who we have here.”

The small demon took several steps toward Kirby. Ava stepped in front of Kirby in her half-changed mode. The demon came at her slashing. Ava fought him, turning and spinning. Now she wished she practiced more.

The demon cackled. “Here we have been just focusing on Faith. We thought once we had her we would then focus on Kirby. This is priceless. Tonight we’ll leave with both.”

All eight demons attacked. Ava turned he
r attention on the largest one who was coming for Kirby. She knew Kirby was focusing on the minions, trying to distract them and get them to inflict as much damage as they could on the demons.

Ava focused on the sharp tail, it was a nasty, agile thing with its arrow ends slashing into her. The demon grinned as she fought it. She dodged his thorn covered, meaty arms and hands that keep trying to grab her and squeeze the life out of her.

She made the mistake of looking for Kirby and the others. Faith was being super woman, Sandra was struggling, but just as she was grabbed around the waist Ava noticed Sara bend down to the still wet floor and all around Sara the floor turned to ice. The demons coming to her did an instant stop, their tails still trying to grab at Sara.

Ava slashed and fought as the demon held his thick, heavy arm around her. The thorns pressed hard against her tough, fur coated skin. Snarling, she cut off his arm, thanking God for her protective fur as the acid blood went everywhere. Backflipping, Ava slashed a demon tail and ran to help Kirby.

They all fought until they were cornered together in the far side of the club. The demons had wicked grins on their faces, Ava could see there were still eight, but they were missing several body parts. She glanced at Faith who turned just in time to take a tail hit to her back not her stomach. Ava howled, twisting as a fat, sharp clawed hand grabbed her hair. She spun, crossing her blades in a round house slash which cut the demon’s hands off.

Faith and Kirby went down. Lexie was already being dragged, Erin was backed into the wall, and Sandra was caught in a chokehold. All looked lost. The sprinkler turned on again, and Stacy pushed Sara up and froze the water as it fell on the demons. They screamed as the ice met their skin and pieces of them fell away. Ava laughed, going to help Kirby and Faith. She smiled when she heard three…no, four if she counted a human, crashing through the main entrance to the building.

Rane, Tray, Hayden, and one of the new English werewolves came roaring toward the demons. The English guy went straight to help Lexie. Rane came for Kirby, so Ava went to help Faith.

Later Ava would blame the men coming in as a distraction for what happened next. She turned to help Faith only to be grabbed by the tallest, biggest demon. He embedded one of his horns into her shoulder. One of his hands came around her waist and the other wrapped around her neck. Her screams were cut off as she fought, using her feet and what mobility she had of her hands. When free of his hold on her neck, covered in blood and aching all over, she yelled in pain as she slid off the horn which was embedded in her shoulder. Overcome with pain, she slashed out violently at the demon, cutting its hand off.

  Chapter 3

Logan ran into the club and almost roared himself when he saw Ava in werewolf mode running toward Faith only to be skewered through her shoulder by the biggest demon’s horn. Logan saw red when one of the demon’s hands wrapped around her neck. He pulled his knife out and drew on the powers of the supernaturals around him. He laughed when he felt a water element…that explained the holes in the demons’ bodies.

Logan found an earth element and grasped onto her powers, focusing on the ground the concrete cracked and groaned and the demons foot slipped. Ava screamed in pain but managed to free herself and cut off the hand of the demon that’d been holding her. Knowing she was okay, Logan turned his attention elsewhere.

Running to the bar, he switched, channeling the water element, drawing on her powers. He yelled to his brother, “Water, work with me.” After several yells, Hayden finally ran closer. Logan used his machete knife to cut the water pipes and call up the water. It shot up and he pushed it to his brother so he could help aim it and keep it in a round like long shape to shot at the demons.

Sara seemed to notice his pull on her powers. She fought it for a moment, looking around until she spotted him and Hayden. Sara ran from out of the protection of Tray, and came to him to help. He growled out. “Hayden. Help Hayden.”

As Sara touched Hayden it became easier to control the water, and he didn’t have to concentrate as hard. Together they focused on the demons, sending ice cold water straight through their bodies.

A demon’s tail slashed at Logan’s hands, yanking it out of the circle shape he held. Water slopped and fell without the round shape of his hands to help guide it. Logan dropped the link to focus on the demon only to sigh in relief as Kane, five other werewolves, and two military men joined the fight.

The military men ran over to help him, along with a werewolf named James. As soon as they had the demon under control, Logan grinned now recognizing his ability to feed off and manipulate Sara’s element. Sara laughed as he and Hayden shot more holes in the last of the demons.

Logan looked around at the carnage. The club was destroyed. Logan winced as he saw the floor. He really must have been pissed off, because the concrete was cracked in several places, not just where Ava had been.

Thinking of the hot werewolf, he looked around for Ava and saw her leaning heavily on the wall, being chewed out by one of her brothers. He moved closer to see it was Kane.

“Ava, because of your selfishness you have put mates at risk. You’ve been taught since birth to fight. If you’d listened, or turned up to class, you wouldn’t be in this shape. Because of you, my mate and Kirby got hurt.” Kane smashed his fist into the wall beside Ava.

When their conversation became loud and Ava flinched, Logan rushed over, without thinking about what he was doing. He didn’t know what came over him. He stepped in front of Ava and stared at Kane, snarling, “That last comment was uncalled for, Kane. You need to leave Ava alone, now. Go take a breather.”

Kane growled, taking a step toward him.

It took everything in Logan and all his training to keep looking Kane in the eyes and not take a step back. “You have said enough, Kane. She’s your sister, give her a break, they were fucking outnumbered. Stand down. Go find Faith.”

Kane took a deep breath, nodded to Ava, then turned his gaze on Logan. “Tomorrow we will talk. Don’t think we didn’t see what you did.” He then smiled at his sister. “Have him at my house by three PM, or I will come and find you.”

Ava growled behind him and seemed to get her energy back. Going after her brother, she muttered, “I’m sick of alpha brothers. I don’t care if he is the next alpha. He can’t tell me what to do. I’m going to kick his arse.”

Logan turned, and without thinking he grabbed Ava around the waist. She stopped instantly and grabbed him back and focused on his mouth, mashing hers against his and snaking her tongue with his in an angry, passionate embrace.

They broke apart and she growled to her brother, “We’re leaving now. The girls can get a lift with the others.” Ava then plastered her mouth back on Logan’s, tracing his lip then slipping her tongue past his lips to meet his own. She moaned, sighed, and pulled away, yanking him toward the exit.

Ava dragged him to a black BMW four-wheel drive, shoved him in the passenger side, and sped away with her in the driver’s seat. Logan shook his head. What the fuck had just happened? He turned to Ava and, as if she knew what he was about to say, she cut him off.

“Don’t, don’t open that gorgeous mouth of yours and ruin it. I am driving as fast as I can. So keep whatever you’re thinking to yourself.”

He raised his eyebrows, pissed off at everything that had just happened. He had just exposed his powers, disrespected his superior officer, and was speeding away with a shifter who thought he was her mate. She must have seen his internal struggle because she sighed and pulled the car to a stop at some kind of look out.

Ava grabbed him, pulling him close, and fastened her mouth on his. All the erotic feelings and thoughts started to come back to life inside him. The pent up lust and sexual frustration came crashing into him.

Ava growled and tried to get closer to him. Giving a frustrated snarl, she shoved him away and jumped into the backseat, smiling wickedly. “You going to join me?”

Logan didn’t even have to think, he climbed into the back, loving how the new pos
ition put him on top, in control, or so he thought until she tugged his face down to her mouth again. Ava’s hands were quick as lightning as she unfastened his pants and jacket, growling the whole time.

When he was fully naked she rasped out, “Next time we do this where you can stand up. God, I want the full effect.”

She almost made him come when her hand traced his chest and moved down his body, her mouth following where her hands had been. Fuck, she was flexible, so fucking hot. Ava’s hands circled around his rock hard erection, which impossibly seemed to grow even more under her touch. “Fuck, you’re good, sweetheart.”

  Ava smiled against his skin.

“Sweetheart, you have to stop.” He moved his hands down to remove her hands, but she nipped him. Logan growled and tilted her head so he could tell her again, but the look in her eyes had him moving forward, ripping off the rest of her clothes. She let go of his rock hard dick. Logan used the opportunity to swap position, so she straddled his lap. “You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.”

Ava had dark, dusty brown nipples. She had the best pair of tits he’d ever seen. His hands moved up to caress her breasts, and she arched into him. She was so gorgeous. He placed a light kiss to her mouth, and then slowly moved down, sucking on her neck, which seemed to drive her crazy. Reaching her breasts, he gently kissed each one before sucking one into his mouth and then the other. Licking the pointed berry tip and moving to the next after he’d given a light nip.

Logan’s hand moved down her taut stomach to find the neat little triangle at the juncture of her legs. Ava moaned and tried to push his hand to where she wanted it. He chuckled against her breast and she melted into his mouth at the sensation.

“Logan, come on, please. I need…I need.”

He kissed each breast and moved his hand back up to cup her face. Her sky blue eyes shone brightly. “I promise I will give you what you need. Be patient.”

She growled, turned her head, and nipped his hand, then kissed it. “I don’t do patience well. I have been horny since I met you. I couldn’t even masturbate because we have a full house, but fuck I just want you to stick your—”
